A trip up the Andes down the Cloudforrest

Choquequirao

This ancient city in southern Peru, compared only to the Machu Picchu, or big mountain, makes for the absolutely perfect adventure trip. The access to this magical place, though treacherous, takes anyone through a life-changing journey. The willing who make the effort, will charrish the experience and can be taken as an alternate trail to the big mountain. The length of the trip can take up to six days.

The bus that departs for Abancay is usually on time and the place to get off is called Saywite. To walk to the town of Cachora should take about an hour and walking uphill to Playa Santa Rosa, another four, where an obligated stop through the night. The morning is usually quite muggy and an early stroll will take you to Choquequirao. A day should be enough to visit the complex including the Ushnu, a watching tower on top.

The only trail continues on to Machu Picchu, Vilcabamba, or the mighty Salcantay. I recommend the one to the ruins of Huancacalle and Vilcabamba, which are at a lower elevation; the vegetation is more plentiful and good guides do this trek regularly.

My pitch for this story is to relate ten days of adventures in the lower-Andes region of Peru. This trip is a true Indiana Jones adventure, is really off the beaten tourist path and it has the elements for a good story and can be used as an itinerary.
