Media and Democracy Day

Just went to Media and Democracy Day, a gathering for independent media put on by people from the communications department at SFU. Sat in the plaza of the Downtown Public Library at a Vancouver Observer booth and talked with person after person about media, Vancouver, blogging and more. Heard the Tyee's David Beers talk about the need for independent media to create business pages, which was interesting since VO is about to launch a business page. But what was cool about what he was saying was that independent media should redefine what a business page is: about sustainability, not growth. About happiness, not the bottom line.

It was interesting also to hear him talk about how when he started The Tyee, Facebook and Twitter didn't exist. That was 7 years ago. And now the blogsophere is packed with great stuff, but much of it, he said, is opinion. He told the audience of about 150 people that this could never replace real journalism, which is about hard work, not opinion.

It was great to be with so many people who care that deeply about media.
